Let’s Talk Dryden: May 27th at 6:30pm

For the first meeting of our new discussion series “Let’s Talk Dryden”, we will be reading Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy’s Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. This non-fiction read was published in April 2020 and encourages us to reach out and build a more connected community.  We will meet via Zoom this month, but are planning in-person (outdoor) discussions for June!

Call the library at 844-4782 or send an email for more information or to reserve your copy of the book. As always, you can use curbside pickup or you can come into the library and connect with one of our friendly staff members!

This program is provided through support from the Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL).

Here are the discussion questions to think about as you read:

  1. What do you think of Murthy’s analysis of the problem of loneliness?
  2. How do you see it’s impact in our community, especially as we live in a pandemic and post-pandemic world?
  3. What hindrances do you see in our community that increase social isolation?
  4. What do you think would help to create social connection for adults in Dryden?
  5. What changes or recommendations would you give to organizations, agencies or  the general community?
  6. What events, programs or activities would bring people together? What skills or expertise would you like to share? What would you like to learn about or do?

More about the book:

The book we need NOW to avoid a social recession, Murthy’s prescient message is about the importance of human connection, the hidden impact of loneliness on our health, and the social power of community.

Humans are social creatures: In this simple and obvious fact lies both the  problem and the solution to the current crisis of loneliness. In his  groundbreaking book, the 19th and 21st surgeon general of the United States Dr. Vivek Murthy makes a case for loneliness as a public health concern: a root  cause and contributor to many of the epidemics sweeping the world today from alcohol and drug addiction to violence to depression and anxiety.

But, at the center of our loneliness is our innate desire to connect. We have evolved to participate in community, to forge lasting bonds with others, to help one another, and to share life experiences. We are, simply, better together.  Together offers inspiring and encouraging stories of individuals and  communities who are making great strides in helping us to understand that we  are not alone.

Told with great compassion and hope, Dr. Murthy makes a powerful and convincing argument for why we can and must build a more connected world.
