Lunch & Learn: Begged, Borrowed & Stolen with Jan Bridgeford-Smith

On Wednesday, December 11 we welcome Jan Bridgeford-Smith to the Lunch & Learn for a presentation of Begged, Borrowed, & Stolen: True Tales of Thievery from America’s Past, a collection of true stories detailing the different icons, historical documents, art, patents, ideas, and more that have been stolen throughout US history. Drawing upon years of research and an extensive collection of photographs, Jan Bridgeford-Smith sheds light on how land, art and treasures, ideas, and even bodies and elections were stolen from right under our noses!
Jan Bridgeford-Smith’s passion is history with a twist. She looks for off-the-grid stories from America’s past–that is, stories about famous or obscure people and places where an unfamiliar detail or unexpected anecdote is tucked into the tale.

Do you have a story to tell? Join the Southworth Library Writing group. The group will meet every second Thursday of the month at 11am. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, December 12th.
– Get prompts and ideas to unleash your creativity.
– Practice writing in a supportive, encouraging group.
– Share your writing for feedback (always optional). No experience necessary! Whether you write in a journal, have ideas for a novel, want to leave a memoir for your grandchildren, or are a published author, you’re welcome to join. These one-hour workshops will involve a variety of prompts, writing time, and opportunities to workshop pieces. All abilities and interests are welcome!

We’ll spend some time chatting and getting snacks, and give a preview of the give away book and then you will be free to grab a cozy seat and read in a room with other readers, no conversation required! You can take the free book featured, By the Book by Jasmine Guillory, or you can bring your own book along.
This book group book is appropriate for ages 16+. Light refreshments will be served.

The Cold War, Spies & Espionage

The Southworth Library presents a new adult discussion series on The Cold War, spies, espionage and the world that was made. This monthly reading and film discussion series examines how the hidden world of espionage influenced the most crucial and climactic years of the Cold War and the impact on relationships in the current world order between East and West with the new Russia, China, the EU and the US. Using a series of texts that examine the political and cultural climate of the Cold War, the stories of the agents who influenced them and the current Cold Wars, our discussions will examine the past and the present world order. Our examinations will also include film excerpts. Dr. David Flaten, Professor of History at Tompkins Cortland Community College, will facilitate discussions each month based on readings and film excerpts. Materials will be available at the library. We will meet on the following Tuesday evening:
- December 17 at 6:30 pm: Spies and double agents- the story of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the end of the Cold War.
